ART FIRST NATIONS : Tradition and Innovation in North America

By Bill Zuk and Don Bergland
Elementary and Intermediate

Program Description

The program is presented in sets of images that feature both traditional artwork of Aboriginal master artists based on old and established beliefs and customs as well as innovative artwork which is recent and reflects new outlooks and perspectives. Artworks are themed for easy comparison of earlier eras and later eras within the culture. As the artworks are compared, old and new ideas, concepts and symbols are noted. While the images are inspiring and provide a foundation for Seeing and Making activities, the Art First Nations program emphasizes change. It offers a unique comparative perspective for becoming more knowledgeable about art and culture. Students acquire a newfound respect and appreciation of the native people’s rich cultural heritage and an understanding of innovation and how art and culture change over time.
